Dr J.R. McKay is an assistant professor of Political Science at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) since 2008. He served as the Chair of the Military and Strategic Studies programme from July 2011 until January 2014.

Dr McKay primarily teaches courses in international relations and strategic studies but is developing deeper research interests in Canadian politics. He has an eclectic range of research interests, including coercion in international relations, the use of airpower, limited conflicts and nuclear weapons, regionalism in Canadian politics and Indigenous issues in Canadian politics. His current research is twofold: first, he is examining trends in the strategic studies literature since the end of the Cold War and second, he is examining issues pertaining to the British Columbia Treaty Process.
