A graduate of the University of Sheffield, Professor Ion's work concentrates on modern Japanese and Chinese history, Middle Eastern history, imperial and post-colonial history, Canadian and European history, and the politics of the Third World. The Professor-in-Charge of the Military and Strategic Studies Programme at RMC, he is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Japan Forum, and he has edited (with Roy A. Prete) Armies of Occupation, (Wilfrid Laurier UP), (with Barry D. Hunt) War and Diplomacy Across the Pacific, 1919-1952 (Wilfrid Laurier UP), (with E. Jane Errington) Great Powers and Little Wars (Praeger, 1993), (with B.J.C. McKercher) Military Heretics: The Unorthodox in Policy and Strategy (Praeger, 1993), and (with K.E. Neilson) Military Elites in War and Peace (Praeger, 1996). At present, he has published two volumes of a projected four volume study of Christian missionaries in Japan: The Cross and Rising Sun, both (Wilfrid Laurier Up, 1990, 1993).
